* * *

It always feels a bit odd to have House members at my home. Even though I’m essentially “on call” at all times, I try to keep my personal life separate from my professional one. But this time the threat is to the city I grew up in, and I feel a sense of urgency I’ve never felt before.

As we walk through my front door, Eiji breaks the silence with an appreciative whistle. “Wow, Drew! This place feels so cozy.”

I close the door behind us and give him a quizzical look. “What did you expect it to look like?”

He just shrugs. “I dunno. Like an office or something.”

“Well, I had to have some place to go to get away from that metal tank we usually live in.” I drop my keys on the table and hang my coat in the closet before heading back to my actual office.

Eiji makes himself right at home, casually grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl on the counter. The crisp sound of his first bite follows me to my office. “You’re lucky those weren’t wax,” I say.

“Luck had nothing to do with it.” He waves the apple around like it’s a trophy he’s just won.

The pinboard in my office is a testament to my ongoing investigation. Newspaper clippings detailing the recent so-called overdoses take center stage. Around them are a few older stories about unexplained psychotic episodes that occurred in public places. Eiji surveys the board, still munching on the apple he swiped, and smirks. “Didn’t know you were so old school, Drew.”

“Old school works for me,” I say. “You know, if it ain’t broke…”

“Right, right.” He plops down into my office chair and spins it around once. “I just thought an engineer would be more… cutting edge, you know?”

I unpin several stories I want him to read and hand them to him. “Take a look at these. They’re calling them overdoses, but I don’t think that explains it. It’s too familiar.”

My phone vibrates several times while he’s reading, but I’m too busy finding more articles for him. But Eiji comes from a younger generation, and ignoring a phone seems to be something he just can’t do. “You gonna get that?” he asks.

“This is more important.”

He nods like he understands without letting his smile slip. His cool-headedness is almost compulsory at this point, but I can see him glance over at the screen and back again when he thinks I’m not looking. It buzzes again, and he reads the name on the screen. “Who’s Veronica?”

“Just a friend. She’s probably having some drama with her new boyfriend. I’ll call her later.”

But I never do.
